FINDING THE RIGHT ACADEMY If you are planning to take up Martial Arts training for Fitness, Self-Defense, Discipline, Self-Confidence or other related reasons, here are a few tips in finding a good school. 1) Call the Better Business Bureau (BBB) 2) Call local school Administrators...Teachers, Principals, etc. 3) Talk to community leaders. 4) Find out how long the Academy has been established. 5) How long has it been at current location. 6) Reputation of head instructor and of Academy 7) How do they start new students? 8) Is the Academy full time or part time? 9) How many classes are offered each week? 10) How many classes are taught by head instructor? 11) Are all classes taught by qualified Black Belts? 12) Are students taught a balance of Sparring, Self-Defense and Forms? 13) How does the Academy monitor student improvement? 14) Are a variety of styles offered to enhance the development of students, mental and physical potentials as an individual? 15) Does the Academy have additional training aids, such as video training, stretching machines, showers, sauna? 16) Is the Academy community oriented? 17) Ask to see the Academy Rules and sit in on a class. Is there a standard of discipline in rules as well as in class? 18) Is the emphasis of the Academy’s training directed towards a students self-development of strong moral character or Karate-Kung Fu ego? 19) Compare Academies training facilities, training methods and standards. 20) Cost and travel should be the last on your check list. Get the most you can for your money. But do not forsake quality in order to save a few dollars or to save a few miles travel. Usually you will get exactly what you pay for. Don’t expect to get the best when you pay the least ! Martial Arts training can be very beneficial in building a standard of excellence in your life. It can broaden a persons mental and physical capabilities. It will develop concentration, Discipline, and self-confidence. It makes leaders, not fighters !
